Continue on to
the road junction at Claxby St Andrew and turn right on to Psalter Road.
Follow this road for 1 mile to Skendleby Psalter. Turn right on to a
public footpath opposite the road to Skendleby and proceed up hill along the track, following it
first left and then right. As we pass a hedge on the right, the highest
point of the walk is reached, 75 metres above sea-level. From this
point, a superb view to the east can be obtained, looking across
agricultural lowland to the coast. On a clear day, both Butlins Skyline Pavilion and
Fantasy Island theme park at Ingoldmells can be seen. At the
next waymark, follow the path right, with a line of trees and bushes on
the left.
CAPTAIN
JOHN SMITH
Born in
Willoughby on 9th January 1580, John Smith, the son of a local
farmer was destined for a life of adventure. After attending
early schooling in Alford, perhaps walking along part of this
route description, he went on to receive further education at
Louth Grammar School. Later he began his travels throughout
Europe and eventually in America. Captain John Smith was to
become the first Governor of Virginia in America and is best
remembered for his association with Indian princess Pochohontas. |
Upon reaching a
footpath sign on the left, the track passes into woodland, but still
heading in the same general direction. As we walk on, ignore the track
heading off to the right and follow the waymark ahead. The track decends
to a junction, at which point turn right. Cross a stile to the left of a
fieldgate and follow the left hand side of this grass field to reach the
church of St Margaret, Well.
Turn left in
front of Well church and walk alongside the fence. Proceed down a steep
hill, taking in the view of Well Vale Hall and its lake to the right.
Aim for a footpath sign to the right of 3 fieldgates and then turn
right. Walk alongside a fence and cross 2 stiles. Turn left and follow
the field edge. Cross a stile to reach a road. Turn right and walk
through the village of Well.
After 600
meters, turn left along a track with a public footpath signpost. Follow the
track to the right to a fieldgate beside an old railway line. Turn left along this
old railway line which previously ran from Firsby to Louth. A few metres
on, ignore the first path to the right, but take the next right, back
towards Alford.
Pass through a
gate and into the outskirts of Alford. Cross the minor road on to a
surfaced path and follow it to the right to reach Holywell Road. Turn
left, and go straight ahead. Pass Spanning Drive on the left and Wood
Road on the right. At the end of the road, turn right on to Parson's
Lane and cross to the left hand side of the road. Cross Hamilton Road on to
South Street. Simply follow the street back to the starting point of the
walk.
